CHAPTER 13

SURPRISES

The stag was only feet away and Frank’s death looked like a forgone conclusion, but I wouldn’t let him go without a fight. He was an asshole, but he was MY asshole. Okay bad analogy, but in the moment my mind was racing and thoughts were jumbled.

I shot an Holy Bolt as I ran, it buzzed with as much power as I could inbede into as I rugged on the arcane lines of power that allowed me to cast such spells. Burning the air as it streamed through the air, it was followed by alchemist fire, holy flames from Celeste, daggers from Selene, and a shield from Blaze. But would our wave of attacks get there in time to save our companion, it didn’t look likely.

At the very last moment the warden turned and its lightning took on golden hue, thousands of strands of lightning shot forth and hit our incoming attacks. Each and every one went up in smoke.

Turning back towards Frank, he did the most unexpected thing, he knelt down before the tiny little fairy. Then tilting his head and touching his horns on Franks chest, golden light pulsed and I felt the connection between us strengthen several fold. With a buzz of energy Frank zipped up into the air, coming over towards us.

“Holy hells that thing packs a punch. You putz, why’d you let it take me out like that?” Frank asked, clearly confused at what had happened to him.

“Not sure what you mean,” I said, smiling as I took in the sight before me.

The stag stood, completely healed and back in pristine condition. The aura of awe returned and I couldn’t imagine trying to hurt the Warden. I didn’t resist the feeling, instead I smiled as a chest appeared in the middle of the grove and the Warden, with one final tilt of its head, ran into the trees and out of sight.

“Time for some loot!” I declared. Seeing the confusion on the faces of my companions, I laughed. “Don’t look a gift horse, or in this case a deer, in the face. Let’s collect our loot and get out of here.”

“Me first,” Selene said, disappearing into the shadows and reappearing over the chest. With a quick check from traps, I saw her open it up.

This chest was unlike any I’d seen before, it had a crystal almost see through color to it where the metal usually was. Seeing my confusion, Gideon spoke up.

“It’s a crystal level chest, super rare, never seen one myself,” he said, rubbing his hands together. “We should get some pretty unique and rare items from it.”

“Me next,” Blaze called as Selene pulled free a slender blade so dark that it hurt my eyes to focus on it. It was as if, even in its sheath, the blade pulled in all the light around it, making it hard to follow with your eyes.

Blaze dove deeply into the chest and pulled free a chestplate. It was an interesting piece of armor, instead of metal it had a bark like appearance with gnarled stumps as shoulder plates.
